Submitting content to be published in the Vine

We love reader supplied content and encourage people to submit stories, letters, photos, calendar items and local information for potential publication.

CALENDAR ITEMS
Calendar submission guidelines for not-for-profit event information:
This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with CALENDAR in the subject line. Be sure to include the name of the event, date, time, location, contact information and/or a website to link to. We can not attach PDFs to our calendar, so please send all of the information as text.

Promote your not-for-profit event with a story!
If you would like to get much more visibility about your event than just our calendar, send several paragraphs (include a relevant photo if desired) that clearly describe the event. Briefly explain all a reader needs to know about your event as well as provide some contact information. If your submission is just one or two paragraphs, we can't print that as a 'story' so give as much information as you can. We can not attach PDFs unless they are links in a story, so please do not just send us a PDF and 'hope we can do something with it'.

STORIES
Getting published on the Vine: Submissions that are the most likely to be quickly published are those that include:
A story that is as well-written as possible. If you know your content, but aren’t a great writer, we can certainly work with you to edit your submitted content into an attractive piece. For consistency and ease of editing, please do not type in all capital letters. Every story needs at least one clear photo (preferably more). Readers also like links to related articles and/or videos that they may find informative. Send us a short author bio and photo if this is your first submission.

Submission guidelines for stories, articles, letters and editorials:
Community Vine welcomes reader supplied material. We will edit, and when time permits, allow the author to approve the finished copy. Most editing will be for grammatical reasons. Before you submit any content to the Vine, you must read and agree to the following information (they are easy to understand common-sense practices with no fine print or tricky wording):

The Vine can not pay for published materials—we operate on the ‘Wikipedia’ model where many hands make light work and if lots of us contribute a little, we can create a great product.

Readers appreciate newsworthy pieces only and we won't print any infomercial type articles.

All photos and writing submitted must not violate copyright laws (no reusing photos without permission or copying the writing of another author). You take full responsibility for identifying ownership of all submissions of written content, photos and videos. The Vine cannot possibly scour every news source to see if content contributors are sending in plagiarized information or copyright protected photos or video. We will never knowingly republish someone else’s content without giving the author or photographer credit. By submitting any content, you are asserting that you have ownership rights to it. If you are submitting a photo that someone else took, have them This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it the photo to us with permission to reprint.

Any original submission can be submitted elsewhere, but if our volunteer proofreaders edit it, all changes remain the property of Community Vine—no sending our edited content to other news sources. This is a no-strikes policy and will be strictly enforced.

We prefer original articles. All topics are welcome, as long as they are done in good taste and are not slanderous. We don’t accept blogging type articles, and author names must be attached.

How to submit stories or story ideas:
Send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it if you'd like to submit a story or suggest that our team of volunteers research and write about a topic.

PHOTOS AND VIDEOS
Photos must be in .jpg or .bmp format. Videos must be submitted in the form of a link to a YouTube video clip. If you would like photos attributed to you, please let us know.

LETTERS AND EDITORIALS
Although we don’t limit the length of letters to the editor, if it’s so long that it looks like a story, we’ll call it an editorial. Note that letters must respectfully convey your message and opinions. We print all coherent, respectful letters and editorials that are relevant to local readers. We may contact you with editing suggestions in order to be able to publish marginally respectful letters and editorials.

REGULAR STORIES
We currently have several Regular Stories (complete list below, each with a link to a sample story). If you would like to brainstorm a new category of Regular Stories, we'd love to hear from you. Missing from our Regular Stories are book reviews. Anyone?

This Day in History
  • Mount Saint Helens Erupts (1980)
Beginning in mid-March 1980, a series of earth tremors and steam explosions at Washington's Mount Saint Helens suggested that the volcano—dormant since 1857—was on the verge of erupting. Then, on May 18, the entire north side of the mountain exploded in a cloud of ash, rock, and fiery gases that collapsed a good part of it and carried debris for many miles. About 60 people were killed, and millions of tons of ash blanketed much of the American northwest. How far did the ash eventually spread? Discuss
  • Muhammad Ali Becomes of Egypt (1805)
Four years after Ali, an Ottoman army commander, helped drive Napoleon from Ottoman-ruled Egypt, he was named wali—governor—of Egypt. He helped modernize Egypt and attempted to secure its independence. Though unsuccessful, his efforts established his progeny as the rulers of Egypt and Sudan for nearly 150 years and rendered Egypt a de facto independent state. He is thus considered one of the fathers of modern Egypt. How did Ali trick Egypt's Mameluke leaders into walking into a massacre?
  • Junko Tabei Becomes First Woman to Summit Mount Everest (1975)
Tabei founded a climbing club for women in Japan in 1969 and, by 1972, was a recognized mountain climber. When Japanese newspaper and television companies sponsored an all-female expedition to climb Mount Everest, Tabei was one of the 15 women selected to go. In 1975, after months of training and preparation, the 35-year-old mother of two became the first woman to reach Everest's 29,035-foot (8,850-m) summit. What disaster partway up the slope nearly ended the climb?
