Oakmont Travelers 3 on 3 Tournament results

up-for-the-rebound

Oakmont Regional High School was the site for over 40 teams from across Central Massachusetts who competed in the first annual Oakmont Travelers 3 on 3 Tournament on Saturday, July 17.  The double elimination event featured truly excellent basketball in 3 age brackets:  Rookie: 5th-6th Grade, NCAA: 7th-9th and NBA: 10th grade+.

3-on-3-tournamentIn the Rookie bracket, the Gunners from Shrewsbury cruised through their bracket without a loss defeating Oakmont G6 Girls (Hannah Everidge, Erika Hall, Megan Sears and Lindsey Russ) in a very competitive rematch in the final.

In the highly competitive NCAA division, Quabbin's Home Boyz (Dylan Kierman, Nick Latta, Alex Boucher, Andrew Haley) avenged a loss earlier in the day and took down Team Notorious (Bobby Colgate, Nijal Hamberg, Nathan Nash, Jared Trainque) from Lunenburg twice to earn the title.  This division featured some excellent girls teams from Nashoba, Oakmont and Wachusett as well who competed at a high level throughout the tournament.  Westminster Police Chief Salvatore Albert's NBA entry, WES PD, rallied without their absent leader and defeated the hot shooting NBA Gunners from Shrewsbury.

The WES PD squad rolled through their bracket undefeated with tenacious defense and inside/outside scoring.  Former Oakmont stars Ethan Deslauriers and Alex Tambling and playground legend, Alex "Little Hollywood" Stamas dominated the event from the start, with a dazzling passing display and deadly 3 point shooting.

Proceeds from the tournament will go to the Oakmont Travelers' scholarship fund. We had a great turnout for our 1st annual tournament and hope to build on it next year. These kids had a great time and that's what its all about.

Dan Farrell 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament

On Saturday, June 12, 2010, The 8th Annual Dan Farrell Memorial "3 on 3" Basketball tournament was held at Oakmont Regional High School from 9am until 7 pm!  We had 51 teams participate in 7 divisions throughout the day and many many spectators came to watch the teams play as well as participate in the raffles, enjoy the food (Jeff Lawrence's special sausage and peppers was my favorite), and enjoy the pictures from years past as well as this year entries in the "Where in the World are the Dan Farrell t-shirts" contest!

Westminster family gets much needed accessible addition to their home

 Megan-Foley-welcoming-the-crowd

Beau and Krista Joyce of Westminster have spent the last 11 years living in their house, but as their son Zachary grew they felt that their family was divided in two. Their home had only one bathroom, and it was upstairs. Zack's wheelchair no longer fit through the door from his bedroom to the rest of the house. The family was forced to install an exterior door out of Zack's bedroom, and since he was about 10 years old he has lived his life a narrow doorway away from the rest of his family. He couldn't join them at the dining room table and there were no family movie nights, unless they all squished into Zack's tiny bedroom. After two potential projects and their financing fell through, Beau and Krista felt hopeless. When they first started meeting with people from Habitat for Humanity of North Central Massachusetts about putting the much-needed addition onto their home, Krista said, “I'm not getting excited about this until they dig the hole.”

the-FamilyOn May 25, 2010, the entire Joyce family, including Beau and Krista, Zachary and sisters Taylor and Caylin, welcomed visitors to a blessing ceremony of their fully accessible addition, which consists of a bedroom and bathroom for Zachary. They also gave tours of their expanded home, a project only made possible thanks to the organizational efforts of the people at Habitat for Humanity of North Central Massachusetts and their group of volunteers.

The blessing began with a welcome by Megan Foley, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of North Central Massachusetts, which was followed by an invocation by Pastor Chris Brown of the First Baptist Church of Westminster. Vickie Briggs of Matson Community Services and Janet Chambers from the Habitat for Humanity of North Central Massachusetts Board of Directors both spoke about this project and HFH in general.

 Mike-Nobrega

Mike Nobrega, Construction Manager, presented a Bible to the family and talked about how this specific project differed from most others that they get involved with. The family continued to live in the home throughout the course of the project, which is unusual for a Habitat project, and according to Krista it made for a long and difficult few months. They felt as though they had no privacy, and people were coming and going all the time. Now that the project is complete, and they see how happy Zack is, Krista said  they would do it 100 times over again for him. She especially thanked her husband Beau for being so supportive and working so hard with the volunteers during the construction of the addition.

Zachary's 12-year-old sister Taylor spoke emotionally about the difference that this project has made in their lives. She talked about how desperate they were to have an addition built onto their home, and that without it Zack was likely going to have to move to a residential school. Taylor said in the past Zachary had to eat in his room, but now he comes out into the dining room--because he can--the doors are wide enough. And when he does come out, they are a family again. She closed by saying thank you to Habitat for Humanity and to all who gave donations.

Krista-and-TaylorKrista Joyce said that this addition is the best thing that's ever happened to their family and for that they thank Habitat for Humanity, RCAP (Rural Community Assistance Program), Matson/ARC, DDS (Department of Developmental Services) and all other sponsors and volunteers. Donors include Aubuchon Hardware, First Congregational Church of Westminster, HH Gagnon Fund, Jeff Haley, The International Golf Club Charitable Foundation, Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services, Matson Community Services, Trowbridge Engineering, Northland Engineers, Rural Community Assistance Program, Saint Edward The Confessor Church, Tyco Simplex-Grinnell, Unitil, VFW Post 7389, Westminster Board of Health, Westminster Building Department, Westminster Lions Club, Westminster Neighbors Helping Neighbors and Young Life Ministries.

Oakmont beats Revere High School in qualifying round of WGBH High School Quiz Show!

Quiz-Show-contestants

It was a Saturday back in February, in the studios of WGBH-TV, when four of Oakmont’s best and brightest students faced off against four of Revere High School’s best and brightest for “High School Quiz Show”.  It was David vs. Goliath, with Oakmont playing the role of David having an enrollment less than half that of Revere High School.

An informal survey of friends in Ash-West showed that few people had heard of this.  Of the few who had heard that Oakmont was taking part, only one person was aware of when it had been broadcast and what the result was.  This article is intended to get the word out to the readers of the Community Vine about a group of four Oakmont students that we should all be proud of.

The Team:

The four Oakmont contestants were Zachary Paul, Mike O’Regan, (shown with High School Quiz Show Hosto Dhaya Lakshminarayanan), Alex Fredette and Emily Lambert. All four are seniors and members of the National Honor Society.

Emily Lambert is currently 5th in the class of 2010.  She is very involved in theatre and dance.  Emily has appeared in a total of 24 productions between her work at “Theatre at the Mount” and at Oakmont.  As a member of “The Dance Center” competition team she recently received a special judges’ award that the judges called the Triple-Threat Award for her excellence in singing, dancing, and acting!  Emily was a winner of the St. Michaels book award for Scholarship and Service last year.  She will be attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for Biomedical Engineering.

Mike O’Regan is the youngest member of the team at 17 due to being advanced a grade.  He is a school choice student from Athol who considers himself to be part of the Ash-West community.  Mike received a leadership award for ice hockey and was a member of this year’s State Champion ice hockey team!  Mike has received academic awards for overall performance as well as excellence in Algebra 2 and English.  He will be attending Worcester Polytechnic (WPI) intending to double major in mechanical engineering and math.

Zach Paul won top honors in the Lions Club Youth Speech Competition, was selected to attend Boys’ State, and is a Presidential Scholar. He is a senior at Oakmont, and will be attending UMass Dartmouth in the fall of this year. His favorite subject in school is history, and he also takes AP Calculus, AP Chemistry, and AP English. He like most sports, but his favorites are baseball and tennis.

According to Zach, the High School Quiz Show representatives from Oakmont were selected in an informal manner. All of the members are seniors in the Oakmont chapter of National Honor Society. Zach said that the NHS advisors just asked for whoever was interested, and he volunteered.

Zach added "I thought it was fun to be on the show. The experience wasn’t too stressful, and while we were waiting for our taping of the show, we kept ourselves occupied and we kept off the nerves. I was probably most nervous right before our taping began, but once we got going, I settled in and felt fine. Overall, it was a fun experience, and I’d do it again."

The Game:

Spoiler alert!  If you’d like to watch the show now: click here and look for the “High School Quiz Show: Oakmont Regional vs. Revere” entry under the small Video tab on the page.

The game consists of 4 rounds.  In the first round, which lasts 6-8 minutes, questions are read by the host and any player on either team can hit their buzzer to get 10 points for a correct answer.  One of the Oakmont students said, “Probably the most stressful part of that was that the buzzers were finicky…”

ROUND 1 (Toss-Up Round)
About halfway through the first round, Oakmont was down by 40 points (110-70) when the host read the following question:

Question:  The Topkapi Palace is a museum in which of these cities: a) Paris,  b) Tokyo,  c) Saigon, or d) Istanbul?
Watching the show, I wasn’t even sure what the host had said (The taupe coffee Palace?), but Emily had it instantly - D!
The lead was cut to 30.

Next question: What South American country controls Easter Island in Polynesia?
This time Zach had it instantly: Chile!
And the lead was down to 20.

Who wrote the Star-Spangled Banner?
Zach: Francis Scott Key!
The lead was down to 10.

Revere got a correct answer to get their lead back to 20.

Then…

Question: After the Civil War what was the first southern state to be readmitted to the union?
Zach: Tennessee!

What military conflict consumed Lyndon Johnson during his Presidency?
Zach: The Vietnam War

What 3 syllable term beginning with ‘I’ describes the difference in musical pitch?
Emily: Interval!

And just like that Oakmont had taken the lead 130-120!

When the round ended, Oakmont had increased their lead to 150-120!

ROUND 2 (Hot-Seat Round)

The 2nd round is a quick 1 minute round in which a single student from each team is chosen to go head-to-head with the chosen member of the other team.  Correct answers are worth 10 points and incorrect answers lose 10 points.  Oakmont chose Zach to go head-to-head against Lillian from Revere.

When the 2nd round was finished, Zach had increased Oakmont’s lead to 60 points, 180-120!

ROUND 3 (Category Round)

The 3rd round is the longest round lasting 8-10 minutes.  Players pick from a board of 6 categories.  Each category has 5 questions.  The questions are worth 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 points in increasing level of difficulty.  Correct answers gain the number of points shown on the board, while incorrect answers lose the same number of points.  The 6 categories on this night were:
• Out of Africa
• Flower Power
• Paging Dr. Freud
• Blue v. Gray
• Code Breakers
• To Sir with Love

The host described this round as “A game-changer… you can gain a lot here, but you can lose a lot too.”  That description was pretty accurate as Oakmont managed to extend their lead up to 120 points a couple of times, but by the end of the round Revere had closed back to within 40 points: 250-210!  There was just a single round left…

ROUND 4 (Lightning Round)
The 4th round is another quick 1 minute round, but this time it’s team against team so anyone on either team can answer.  Each question is worth 5 points, with incorrect answers resulting in a 5 point deduction.

In the end, it was a very good thing that Oakmont had that 40 point lead going into the 4th and final round as Oakmont dropped 10 points and Revere gained 10 points, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap as Oakmont was victorious 240-220!

Congratulations to all the members of the Oakmont team including alternates Noelle Landry, Morgan Mitchell, and Kirsti Isokungas, and coaches Diane Erickson and Audrey Phelps. It was definitely a team effort.

To close, I’d like to quote a University of Texas official back when UT was looking to hire a number of Nobel Laureates, “We want to have a physics department that the football team can be proud of!” Well Oakmont Regional High School has certainly produced a quiz show team that the football team can be proud of!

This day in history...

This Day in History
  • Mount Saint Helens Erupts (1980)
Beginning in mid-March 1980, a series of earth tremors and steam explosions at Washington's Mount Saint Helens suggested that the volcano—dormant since 1857—was on the verge of erupting. Then, on May 18, the entire north side of the mountain exploded in a cloud of ash, rock, and fiery gases that collapsed a good part of it and carried debris for many miles. About 60 people were killed, and millions of tons of ash blanketed much of the American northwest. How far did the ash eventually spread? Discuss
  • Muhammad Ali Becomes of Egypt (1805)
Four years after Ali, an Ottoman army commander, helped drive Napoleon from Ottoman-ruled Egypt, he was named wali—governor—of Egypt. He helped modernize Egypt and attempted to secure its independence. Though unsuccessful, his efforts established his progeny as the rulers of Egypt and Sudan for nearly 150 years and rendered Egypt a de facto independent state. He is thus considered one of the fathers of modern Egypt. How did Ali trick Egypt's Mameluke leaders into walking into a massacre?
  • Junko Tabei Becomes First Woman to Summit Mount Everest (1975)
Tabei founded a climbing club for women in Japan in 1969 and, by 1972, was a recognized mountain climber. When Japanese newspaper and television companies sponsored an all-female expedition to climb Mount Everest, Tabei was one of the 15 women selected to go. In 1975, after months of training and preparation, the 35-year-old mother of two became the first woman to reach Everest's 29,035-foot (8,850-m) summit. What disaster partway up the slope nearly ended the climb?
