Applewild Summer Camp: top-notch and so close to home!

When you are considering summer camp options for this coming summer, Applewild Summer Day Camp should be high on the list.

Run by Applewild School, under the long time direction of Westminster resident Brian Beaudoin, Overlook Middle School’s Art Teacher and accomplished artist in his own right, this camp stands out for a number of reasons.

First, its location is on the Applewild School grounds, which encompass 26 acres of woods, athletic fields, a state-of-the-art Woodworking Center, a theatre, an outdoor pool, two gymnasiums, a playground, a computer lab, and of course the beautiful main building from which Applewild gets its name—the beautiful Crocker Family Mansion. The Audubon Flat Rock Wildlife Sanctuary is also very close by.

The second reason is that summer campers have full access to all these facilities listed above, allowing children of any age to find something they enjoy. There is everything from Red Cross approved swimming lessons, to archery, to computer programming, to acting, to woodworking, to sports of all sorts.

Perhaps most importantly, the campers also get, by virtue of this camp being part of the Applewild School, a chance to experience the Applewild culture, which encourages respect, fairness, honesty, and similar values. Those values are instilled in the counselors, many of whom are long time employees, returning summer after summer, and they in turn pass that culture along to the campers. It’s something not found as much as it should be these days.

The camp runs in two week sessions, and there are three sessions over the summer. A child can participate in one, two, or three sessions, perhaps choosing to participate in different activities each session.

There is a junior and senior camp. Junior camp is for Kindergarteners and First Graders, while the senior camp is for grades 2 through 10. A program is also offered for older campers, called Counselors in Training (CIT), which teaches these campers how to be counselors, plus how to get positions at other camps (or Applewild) as counselors.

This Day in History
  • Mount Saint Helens Erupts (1980)
Beginning in mid-March 1980, a series of earth tremors and steam explosions at Washington's Mount Saint Helens suggested that the volcano—dormant since 1857—was on the verge of erupting. Then, on May 18, the entire north side of the mountain exploded in a cloud of ash, rock, and fiery gases that collapsed a good part of it and carried debris for many miles. About 60 people were killed, and millions of tons of ash blanketed much of the American northwest. How far did the ash eventually spread? Discuss
  • Muhammad Ali Becomes of Egypt (1805)
Four years after Ali, an Ottoman army commander, helped drive Napoleon from Ottoman-ruled Egypt, he was named wali—governor—of Egypt. He helped modernize Egypt and attempted to secure its independence. Though unsuccessful, his efforts established his progeny as the rulers of Egypt and Sudan for nearly 150 years and rendered Egypt a de facto independent state. He is thus considered one of the fathers of modern Egypt. How did Ali trick Egypt's Mameluke leaders into walking into a massacre?
  • Junko Tabei Becomes First Woman to Summit Mount Everest (1975)
Tabei founded a climbing club for women in Japan in 1969 and, by 1972, was a recognized mountain climber. When Japanese newspaper and television companies sponsored an all-female expedition to climb Mount Everest, Tabei was one of the 15 women selected to go. In 1975, after months of training and preparation, the 35-year-old mother of two became the first woman to reach Everest's 29,035-foot (8,850-m) summit. What disaster partway up the slope nearly ended the climb?
