Ash-West Overlook softball: a perfect week, record now 8-2-1
The Overlook Middle School softball team completed a perfect week improving to 8-2-1 on the season.
On Monday, May 23, the girls faced off against previously unbeaten Sawyer Middle School of Bolton.
In the rain, Sawyer jumped on pitcher Katie Becotte for 2 first inning runs without getting a single hit.
Behind aggressive baserunning from Becotte, shortstop Kallie Napolitano, 2nd baseman Micayla Varieur and catcher Abbie Laroche, Overlook exploded for 10 unanswered runs over the next 4 innings.
Trailing 10-2 entering the top of the 5th, Sawyer knocked Becotte out of the game with 4 runs and Napolitano took over.
Aided by a tremendous play in left field by Amanda Dewick, Napolitano prevented further damage and Overlook then scored 3 more runs in the bottom of the inning with Shea Munnis and Page Toothaker each hitting safely and scoring.
The game was then called in the bottom of the 6th due to heavy rains.
On Thursday, May 26, fireballer Becotte took the circle against Chocksett (Sterling) and this time had her best stuff of the season. The 8th grade phenom took a perfect game into the 7th inning before walking the leadoff hitter.
On that day, Becotte struck out 18 while walking only 3 in a no-hit complete game 4-3 victory while going 2 for 3 at the plate.
Not to be outdone, the Chocksett pitcher, who earlier lost a 3-2 game to Overlook, struck out 13 batters while only giving up 4 hits.
Centerfielder Erica Ulrich (1 for 1, RBI) got Overlook on the board in the top of the 3rd with a line drive single to center field scoring Cammie Brown.
Overlook scored 3 more in the 5th highlighted by Becotte scoring all the way from 2nd on a wild pitch.
Staked to a 4-0 lead, Becotte was aided by a tremendous shoestring catch in the bottom of the 5th by backup centerfielder Tasia Baranowski.
Catcher Abbie Laroche was flawless behind the plate in the no-hit effort and 3rd baseman Madison Cole added a single and RBI along with making a difficult play on a slow roller on the first batter of the game.

Beginning in mid-March 1980, a series of earth tremors and steam explosions at Washington's Mount Saint Helens suggested that the volcano—dormant since 1857—was on the verge of erupting. Then, on May 18, the entire north side of the mountain exploded in a cloud of ash, rock, and fiery gases that collapsed a good part of it and carried debris for many miles. About 60 people were killed, and millions of tons of ash blanketed much of the American northwest. How far did the ash eventually spread?
Four years after Ali, an Ottoman army commander, helped drive Napoleon from Ottoman-ruled Egypt, he was named wali—governor—of Egypt. He helped modernize Egypt and attempted to secure its independence. Though unsuccessful, his efforts established his progeny as the rulers of Egypt and Sudan for nearly 150 years and rendered Egypt a de facto independent state. He is thus considered one of the fathers of modern Egypt. How did Ali trick Egypt's Mameluke leaders into walking into a massacre?
Tabei founded a climbing club for women in Japan in 1969 and, by 1972, was a recognized mountain climber. When Japanese newspaper and television companies sponsored an all-female expedition to climb Mount Everest, Tabei was one of the 15 women selected to go. In 1975, after months of training and preparation, the 35-year-old mother of two became the first woman to reach Everest's 29,035-foot (8,850-m) summit. What disaster partway up the slope nearly ended the climb?
